She’s eighty-something
This old lady
Long-time friend of mine
Thirty years my senior
A road more worn and traveled
A faith that’s still intact
Three girls
And a Prodigal Son
A pastor-husband
That left her years ago
Left her on her own
A model for me
Endurance through the rough times
Divine strength for the journey
A faith unwavering
Despite the circumstances
Her Prodigal Son
A prodigal then
A prodigal now
That never found his way
No substance abuse
No addiction
No purpose
An Ivy-league education
An intelligence hard to match
All for naught
A drifting away
From reality
Cause unknown
It was her birthday last week
We talked
Laughed
Shared
About the challenges that accompany
The journey
The love we have for our Prodigal’s
The helplessness we feel
The surrender that must take place
A pillar of strength
A fountain of faith
The belief that this old lady has
That it will all turn out okay
One day
When we see Him face to face
