90,000 People
A packed stadium
First football game of the season
Tailgate Parties
Laughter
Celebration
He was supposed to be here
Today was to include him
But he was not
His alma mater
Where this nightmare all began
Fraternity parties…drinking….drugs
I look across the stadium
The student section
Such promise in those young smiles
His face…once there
6 years ago we shared that “first” game of the season
with him
His first game of his college career.
A young faced freshman
Holding such promise
WE…excited to see the opportunities that awaited him.
HE…in reflection…anxious and troubled
Inner turmoil beating at his breast
Apparently the problems started sophomore year
Known to us….junior year
That something was amiss
He claimed anxiety…that a doctor had it all under control
A doctor that became his dealer
Of drugs that should never have been prescribed
Hippa regs preventing us from knowing
What parents ought to know.
Tuition dollars thrown to the wind
His “friends”…supplementing where necessary
Playing doctor
It’s all such a blur
Still a puzzle with missing pieces
I wonder at…
if we only had known back then….
The ‘woulda,’ ‘shoulda’, ‘coulda’s’ ring loudly in my ears.
